Access:

How to overcome the unequal access of Internet?

The difficulty on Internet Access is one of the problems the developing countries are facing. For example, Access to the Internet can lower the E-Friction and benefit the local economic Development. According to the Boston Consultation Group’s report about “Grease the wheel of Internet Economy”, E-Frictions originate from the national or local level. Most of them are related to infrastructures, cost to set-up the Internet, outdated regulations and lack of know-hows. The inability for businesses to get online results friction that hinders the development of small businesses, this will in turn drag the economy of the region.

At the same time, there is also gender inequality on Internet Access. According to the Intel “Women and the Web” report on the situation of Women’s access to Internet, on average across developing countries nearly 25 percent fewer women than men have access to the Internet. The situation gets even worse in regions such as sub-Saharan-Africa, women are up to 45% lower than man having access to the Internet. The report also reveal an important correlation between access of Internet and increased income for women in developing countries like India, Egypt, Mexico and Uganda.

Should government censor the Internet?

One World One Internet is always a vision of ICANN and it has been actively pushing the internationalization of the Internet. Different countries have different set of laws and regulation on their Internet and when it comes to Internet Governance, same concepts will be taken on various interpretations due to political and economic concerns, the issue of IDN can be seen as an example. It is understandable to introduce different standards for different countries in view of respecting their distinct culture. However, is the Internet still “One Internet for the world” in this regard?

  • Should the line be drawn between appropriateness and inappropriateness on the Internet?
  • Is Internet censorship needed?
  • How to define the appropriateness of the content on Internet?
  • Who have the authority to define?
  • How can the government strike a balance between National Security and Freedom of Speech?
  • Is there any conflict of Interest among different stakeholders?

In 2013, over 552 Million Individual Identities are leaked via Internet due to cyber security breaches and the breaching activities in 2013 have been surged by 62%. With the revelation of “PRISM” by the US government, concern on private Internet Security has been on the rise.

With India becoming the third-largest smart phone markets, the number of people being able to access the Internet has been surging, hence there are increasing needs for creating an affordable and secured connection to the Internet.
